I think across the board, industrial designers kind of suck at color. How many times have you seen a product designed for a 3rd world country or the elderly that for some reason is a ridiculous shade of lime-green? Color is so important in conveying context, action, and emotion that I’m surprised we don’t focus more on it in our ID studios.
I’m currently taking Color & Communication, a class for communication design majors. It’s great, but oh how I wish I had a Color for Industrial Designers class that could show there’s more to life than just shades of grey and a burn-your-eyes-off spot color.
